The use of standardized coding systems is indispensable for furthering the process of digitization in the floriculture sector. Computer programs cannot operate without codes for all kinds of data. Good examples are your BSN (citizen service number if you live in the Netherlands) and your bank account number.
Floricode manages the codes needed for online trade in the floriculture sector; these include product codes and regulatory characteristics (VBN), GPC codes (GS1), company and location codes (GLN), and codes for logistical resources and process variables.
The coding system most often used in commercial floricultural activities is the LINNAEUS code system. Using this system allows growers, auctions, buyers and carriers to exchange relevant information in digital form about flower and plant lots, each of which has been assigned its own unique code.
Floricode is working together with GS1 Nederland on introducing these codes for use in the floriculture sector so that floricultural companies can associate these codes with the existing codes in common use internationally, particularly in the retail sector. These codes are:
- the item code (GTIN)
- the company and location codes (GLN)
- the product classification code (GPC)
- the logistical codes (SSCC and GRAI)
The documents listed below describe (in Dutch) the standardization policy, the procedures and the reports submitted by the coding working group that was responsible for Floricode’s coding on behalf of the entire sector.
